The picture below shows Herbert Swallow (s3206) who born in Romford, Essex became an ANZAC hero laying down his life for King and Country at Gallipoli in 1916. Herbert's full story can be read at s3206 - here you will find some of the original documentation behind it.
The picture (provided by Carol Thompson) shows him in his ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) uniform was and presumably taken shortly after his enlistment in January 1915.

Herbert was awarded the Australian Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his heroics.
Herbert was a member of the 15th Battalion, 4th Brigade (colours shown here) as part of a 2nd Reinforcements division that was sent to the front. The Battalion left Brisbane on February 13 1915 on the Seang Bee.
The picture left shows the Seang Bee leaving Brisbane on 21 October 1915 - so presumably after returning from the voyage that took Herbert to Turkey. Solders can be seen throwing streamers from the boat onto the docks as it is waved off by what is probably a mixture of family and interested locals.
